Hi

I am trying to use a VM to look at a computer, i have created the image successfully and booted it up with VMWare. As it is an xp image it asks me to activate windows, is there any way around this problem?? Would installing VM tools fix it?? if so where can i download it from.

All help appreciated.

Installing VMWare tools won't fix it. They are just "bits" that allow for better graphics, network and mouse support, shared clipboards etc. Useful, but won't solve this particular problem.

There are two ways that I am aware of to resolve this problem

  1. activate it -) As it was probably pirated in the first place this may be a little difficult. If you are worried about giving the machine network access, you can activate over the phone.
  2. crack it, you can find plenty of "Windows Product Activation Cracks" if you Google in the right places, there are a lot, and, as far as I can tell, they all pretty much work.
  3. [/listo]

Obviously forwarning that such things are (a) illegal, ( although if done in the process of carrying out an investigation, there are likely to be other laws that protect you ) and (b) may contain spyware/malware/flu …

So long as you have an account that you can log in with that has admin rights, if you Press F8 during boot and then enter "Safe Mode", you can then run the product activation crack from a virtual floppy disk ( or a real one linked for that matter ) on the VM.

If you don't …

  • Read some of the other threads about password cracking ?
  • I have read about key generators that can bypass WPA …
  • Try booting from a DOS disk and running the crack, that might do it so long as the HD is mounted.

Hope one of these works …

In VMWare Worstation … ( which I do realise is something different - apart from anything else you have to pay for it, where "Server" is free … Go figure … ) Mounting a floppy is relatively straightforward, go to the "Settings" of your VM ( "VM" menu, "Settings" ), click on the "Floppy Disk" ( or "Add" if you don't have one … ) and then select "Use an Image" and select the FD image that you want to mount …

I guess that "Server" will be broadly similar - it is in Parallels as well …

More info is probably available at VMWare website http//kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?cmd=displayKC&docType=kc&externalId=http--wwwvmwarecom-pdf-servervmmanualpdf&sliceId=pdfPage_139&docTypeID=DT_PRODUCTDOCUMENTATION_1_1&dialogID=16852766&stateId=0%200%2016850650

You may have to be original about the way that you do it, but yes, perfectly -)
