Just because you and I can write SNOBOL, it doesn't mean everyone else needs to. 😉

Indeed I saw Java, but I also have seen Python, so it is encouraging.

Well, besides the specifics of the programming language it is - as said - a philosophical point.

I will produce as an example completely UNrelated to programming, a single page from a HP printer service manual for the old Laserjet 3100 and 3150 models 😯

Now, someone (possibly an otherwise brilliant engineer) has used one whole A4 page on which he/she took the time to produce a table to "demonstrate" something that was summed up in two sentences.

The whole contents of the page including the senseless table (that is only useful to create the circular reference falllacy) and the two longish sentences can easily be written in one single 14 words sentence

DO NOT mix components of the 3100 with those of the 3150 or viceversa.

By the same principles a software engineer would use nowadays a multi-user versioning aware (cloud based) database capable of a zillion concurrent transactions (running in a java VM) to replace the functionality of the Outlook Express Address book.

Everyone of course remains perfectly free to shot oneself in the foot ) , but there are worse and better ways to do that 😉
