I still have a hard time beating the cost of EnCase in acquisition mode on collection machine hooked up via x-over cable to another machine running LinEn and the USB device mounted there. Cheap, clean way for USB acquisitions.

Yeah but if your going to do all that with EnCase, why not purchase the Software Write Blocker from them?

EnCase in acquisition mode is free and there are distros and/or availability of LinEn for free. I am a cheap date.

Greetings,

The Wiebetech USBWB is designed for quickly connecting a thumb drive and working with it. You should be able to hook it all up and look at the drive in a minute or so. Harder to do that with EnCase, Linen, and a second system.

David,

They only designed it to work for thumb drives? Is there some capacity limit that you noted?

True. However it doesn't seem to so as designed wink

I would love to have something such as this that was very reliable. Has anyone had luck with similar devices such as the UltraBlock Forensic USB Bridge?

Greetings,

One of the people at CRU Dataport verbally told me that it was designed with thumb drives in mind.

Curious, we use the USB unit from Tableau for all sorts of USB devices and have never observed issues with them. We have somewhere around 40 of them in use in our field operations.

Greetings,

Oddly enough, about two years ago I had a similar conversation with Tableau about their USB writeblocker - they also said "it was designed for thumb drives". But my only issue with the unit was throughput, not reliability.

I really like my Wiebetech UltraDock but the last batch of write blockers we bought were Tableaus. See my write blocker review on this site for the reasons why, but this recent experience reaffirms that decision.
