Does anyone know of a way to view a .qbw file (QuickBooks for Windows) without the Quickbooks software?
Is there any software that could convert the .qbw format to some other, more easily readable format? Excel, perhaps?
Your best bet is to use VMWare to restore the suspect hard drive to virtual hard drive and boot up the suspect system in VMWare. Use their software to view the file.

I agree, if the suspect machine contains the desired software. But what if it just has the files?

Then break out the credit card or see if Quickbooks has a 30 day trial.
Good Luck!

Quickbooks has a proprietary file format and, to my knowledge, must be accessed via Quickbooks software. Contact me offline at blong@aeagroup.com and I'll be happy to help you.

Quickbook uses a simple fixed-length record database file format.
Depending what you are looking for, you may be able to get the information by simply opening up the file in a hex editor.
Don't forget that most accounting software competitors (Microsoft Money, Accounting Pro, etc.) will have in "import" feature. There are also numerous shareware/freeware packages which cater to Quickbook users which extract and make various use of the data.
If you have an existing acocunting package, it most like will have a method to accomplish this.
