Hello,

We use WinFE from a bootable USB stick. We use a Kingston DT310 which gives us the option of imaging the internal drive back to it using FTK Imager.

The WinFE image has USB 3.0 and eSATA drivers included in it. If the machine has an eSATA port, we image over that to an attached drive, which is nice and fast. If there are no eSATA or USB 3.0 ports available, we look for a PCIe slot and stick a USB 3.0 card in it. We then image to this, which again is nice and fast.

Failing all that, we image out over a USB 2.0 port, but this can take a long time. We don't charge by the hour, so are always interested in imaging as fast as we can!

I have to point out that our first line of attack is to remove the hard drive and image with a TD1. We use WinFE for those awkward hard drives, like VAIO's or iMac's, where we can't be bothered to spend ages stripping them down.

Greetings,

How did you get WinFE to boot an iMac? I've been trying to do this for awhile and failed. Or, more accurately, I've been trying to get it to boot an Air. The only way I could see to make it work would be to install rEFIt on the target system, which isn't a viable option.

David,

I haven't managed to boot an iMac with WinFE from a USB stick, however it will boot fine if you burn the .iso to a bootable CD-Rom. I carry both in my bag of tricks.

As for MacBook Airs, you just attach a Superdrive and boot WinFE, and attach an external disc to the second USB port.

Old MacBook Airs with one USB port are a problem. I had a document on creating a dual-partition USB boot drive to boot from and image to. I'll dig it out and get back to you.
