Sorry, reading back I don't think that I was clear - GPUs onboard graphics cards can be … coerced … into running standard application code in parallel quite quickly …

I was after anyone having "misused" their graphics cards in such a way, what they might have been using it for, and, I guess most of all, if they were willing to share their experience/code and what hardware that they used to do it -P

For greater clarification of what I mean you can see more at http//www.gpgpu.org and http//www.cs.uno.edu/~golden/Stuff/dfrws2007-gpu.pdf …

Greg - that's a dual head card - do you use both outputs ?

More curiosity - are dual screens common ? I would have thought "Yes" …

A good alternative to Pelican Cases are the Hardigg Storm series of case. These are a bit lighter if you don't need to make a bridge out of them. I like the latches better.

I second the nomination of Hardigg cases. Their prices, latches and hinges are better than Pelican's. I have both brands and will say that the difference in latches alone is worth the switch. I can't tell you how many times I've skinned my knuckles on my Pelican. The Hardigg latches are effortless. The retractable handle and nearly indestructible wheels on my roll-aboard are sweeeet!

Hard Drives? Avoid Western Digital. I've had *several* go all hot and cranky on me in the past couple of years.

Hardware Write-Blockers I really like my WiebeTech ComboDock 4. It's compact and the kit has several adapters to fit 95% of what's out there.

I've written a little about the teeny tap and how to use it on my blog. I'll be adding more..I just ran out of time today…

I do agree with you Greg and Austin. The pelican latches are tough.

Azrael - dual monitors is really the only way to go. I bought a matrox dualhead2go for my macbook pro.

Jamie - RAM size I try to put 4 GB in any 32bit machine I have. If it's a linux box(I run two) I put 8GB as I trust 64bit linux more than 64bit windows.

CPU - I put quad cores in my boxes because they are the same price as dual cores, I use it for virtualization and having 4 cores helps when using affinity.

elcomsoft filed for a patent to crack passwords using GPU's (notably the 8800's). Not sure where they got with it, but that's where I see the primary use for them currently. I'd be interested in seeing if they improve indexing speeds.

That looks cool. I run an additional monitor off my MacBook, but I use it in conjunction with the laptop screen … I'll give this a look. Thanks.

I'll see if I can dig that out … I think that there are probably applications in a lot of areas that are currently overly processor intensive - indexing and search included, the trick seems to be the skill to adequately break down a problem into discrete solvable parts without suffering the bottlenecks of I/O …

For write blockers, I'm a big fan of MyKey Tech's NoWrite FPU. The Windows utility for drive info has been very helpful.

Great idea Jamie.

I'm trying to build up my own forensic kit at present to take on imaging jobs - prefer to rely on something that I know and trust rather than use the kit that the office supplies. As such price is a factor, and the most expensive bit of the kit is the write-blocker. Does anyone have any experience of this company and product? http//www.cooldrives.com/fohawbl.html It's cheap, but is it any good?

And in the unlikely event any of you have any unwanted hardware write-blockers then please PM me!

I wonder if there's any value in having a "classifieds" forum for those looking to buy or sell second hand kit (both hardware and software). I've though about it in the past but for one reason or another didn't go ahead with it. What do we think?
