You could always just try imaging the drive using FTK Imager (free to download I believe), opening the image up in the program and seeing if your file is there?

I would suggest as Logan has done, image the drive and use any commercially available data recovery software. You should find what you are looking for fairly easily.

Or also a freeware tool like Photorec

What type of file you've saved the draft in? Possibly, it might be a .doc or pdf or rtf file. Is it just one file that you want to recover or other files? Download a trial version of winhex from x-ways and you can recover whatever files you like by selecting the file type. But there is a limit. Hope this helps! Cheers!!!!

If you use WIndows,, 'PC inspector file recovery' is a great option. It comes in Helix live cd. Then try the 'find lost data' option, and scan all the clusters.

IMPORTANT If the files are corrupted, try to repair the headers in a HEX editor, like 'Bless' or 'WinHex',

cheers

Is this a hard disk drive with a USB interface, or a flash drive?

They differ on recovery methods.

you don't even need to image the usb. stick it in and choose the option 'add evidence item', find the file and right click and export. simples

Greetings,

What is the downside of imaging the USB? It'll take a few moments, eliminates the need to go back to the USB if you want to try something else, and is simply good practice.
