Hi everyone,
I hope someone can help me. Is there a software that can recover the contents of a DLT tapes? I've tried using encase with no success. Please Help.
Regards
MC
Typically you will need the program that wrote the backup to the tape to recover the data. Backups for the most part are proprietary.
There is a program that is supposed to be able to recover "bad" backups from NTBackup & Veritas/Symantec Backup Exec., but I do not have personal experience with it.
How many tapes are there?
What condition are they in?
Do you know, or can you find out what backup software, (and version), was used to back the tapes up?
Simon
Hello mc02,
You should try mm/pc. A fully functional demo can be downloaded at http//
The program is extremely simple to use, and no knowledge of how the original backup or interchange program is required in order to restore the files.
Because MediaMerge/PC can also read the raw data on occasions where the tape has become corrupted, it may still be possible to view or recover information on the tape that the original backup program would report as a 'terminal' error on.

MC02,
If the comment about does not work, we do this all the time. IM me.
Nigel.
Contact eMag Solutions at 404-995-6060 for all your tape needs as well as Deduplication, keyword searching, and Forensics.
You could try dd too. It's free and I think the "Incident Response"(Mandia?) book has some examples.
Good luck.

Hi everyone,
Ok, here's the situation. I used the backup prog that came with Windows XP. I did not use any other software. I would use dd if the backup tape would mount but once i inserted the backup tape nothing appears on the backup prog. We've tested other backup tapes and it works fine so it could not be the tape drive.
Thomas i will try the program, thank you. I will let everyone know how it goes.
Nigel, if this prog does work i will definitely IM you.
Thank you all.

I have used both MM/PC and Nucleus Kernel tape systems extensively. MM/PC is very expensive and you would not want to buy it for one or a few tapes, a bureau service would be much cheaper. Nucleus Kernel is cheap and may well be your solution. The free trial version will tell you if it can read your tape but, frankly, not much more. The full version is not expensive and seems pretty good although it needs some development to make it more reliable.
How expensive is MM/PC? I was researching that product but could not find a price before contacting them.
Thanks in advance.
