Is it possible to recover the data from a SIM card that was broken in pieces?

The investigator has tried "reassembling" all the pieces together on a piece of Scotch Tape, and using a SIM reader to try and read the data off the SIM but it did not work.

My guess is that it will never work because a SIM card must contain an electronic chip and if it is broken, than the data is unrecoverable. But still I wanted conformation from people that might be more knowledgeable than me in electronics.

Thanks.

The following resource might be useful to you http//www.3gforensics.co.uk/content.php/202-SIM-Data-Recovery

It's possible that the silicon chip is still in one piece and in working order however the bond wires, the wires that connect the pads on silicon chip with the connectors on the external underside of the SIM are likely to have become damaged.

The only way you are likely going to recover from this is to etch down to the pads and probe the pads directly with a probe station.

You can use a chemical etching solution from 3g Forensics.

From memory, you will need 5 probes, VCC, VSS, CLK, GND, I/O

Hope it helps. Good luck!

Theoretically, you could reverse engineer the EEPROM from a die extracted from a SIM.

Presuming you have the expertise, tools, time and very good vision the concept is explained here under "Gate Read Acquisition".

Of course, then you would need to interpret the data properly.

Theoretically mrgreen .

Thanks guys, but I've been able to get the opinion of 2 people to which I have sent the pictures of the SIM and they both told me that it was unrecoverable.
