I have to speak highly of the 1TB green WD's as well, I have had several seagates not work straight out of the box in recent months however. I would suggest staying away from them for the time being.

WD has always been my drive of choice, for data recovery, parts are easy to find and in general they are stable drives. A week or so ago I bought 4 1.5TB Segate Free Agent Xtreemes. I use them in acquisitions at client sites. They are very reliable thus far but are not shock resistant. I've had one slide off of a tower resulting in the click of death.

You could save some money by getting something like the Antec MX-1. I'm using a couple of these with 1TB WD Greens and they are great for onsite. They are fairly shock resistant as the drive is mounted on rubber grommits, and the cooling is good for higher heat environments.

It's better than using a dedicated external drive because I put the master image in the evidence locker on the original imaging drive for each case.

Lacie make a large range of drives. In my opinion, not all have good cooling. Take care.

We have been running 16 Seagate Barracuda ST31000340AS SATA drives non-stop since September in our array here and not one of them have coughed once.

I also have a Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB and I am very happy with its performance and reliability.

We've got a few AcomData External 1TBs.
http//www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822216055
Very quiet and so far (touching wood, crossing fingers) have been great.

They have USB, Firewire and eSata interfaces.
Small footprint.

NewEgg (I am not affiliated in any way to Acom or New Egg *grin*) had it for $99 but its now back up to $129 - still a decent price me thinks.

Stay away from western digital.

go for Seagate datacenter grade. they will run and run and run.
If you check out the "disk drive recovery" professionals , you will see that they have the least sucess with westerndigital drives.

Seagate = 5 years Guarantee , that says a lot.
also under stress , and if you drive fans fail , seagate will take far more punishment, I have found that WD die very quickly when they are taken out of spec, even marginally.
