I spend at least 1 hour a day just reading up on forensic techniques and technologies as a forensic examiner, is this average? Or should I be working harder at research? )

I'm curious what other qualified examiners classify as normal for them.

Probably can't class it as research, but throughout the course of most days i'll probably keep up with the messageboards, when i've got a natural break in what i'm doing, or when i've reached the point where i'm going dangerously crosseyed.
(i realised looking at a different screen sounds stupid for the crosseyed bit, but anything other than trudging through 8 zillion documents, or images, or whatever, is a break at times)
So i'd call that an hourish perhaps.

Yeah, I wouldn't call reading to keep up "research". I use an RSS feed to track some blogs pertinent to my needs, but "research" usually involves something more active on my part.

Greetings,

I spend at least an hour a day reading various lists, this forum, and listening to podcasts. I'd qualify these as "keeping current" rather than research. When I spent a fair bit of time trying to figure out the YAFFS2 filesystem on Android phones, that was research.

I would say I easily spend 2-3 hours a day. Helps to have a dual monitor set-up to keep all the news feeds, Forensic Focus, Digital Detective, Linked In, etc. open and refreshing 😉
