I had posted this before when asked about getting AOL messages off a machine. This has been very helpful on a number of cases we've worked.

Upto and including AOL8 is fairly simple to view without any specific SPECIAL software but AOL9 by the way it has changed its loading is a bit more difficult but can still be done manually without toomuch effort however as well as the last one mention the ACCESS DATA FTK package is also very good at allowing access and decryption of ALL AOL versions. Just for info in case anyone is interested

mark777 tell me how to do it with AOL. 9 . Having difficulty doing what I normally do with 8 (i.e. extract the folder to a machine with it already installed and click the waol.exe)…..

Andy,

AOL 9.0 is a little different than previous versions as it places files & folders in your documents and settings folders. Copy everything out of the following locations (to the same locations on your machine). There is no need to do a clean install:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\AOL
C:\Program Files\America Online 9.0
C:\Program Files\Common Files\AOL

By doing it this way rather than installing it you avoid potential problems with passwords. 9.0 keeps it's security settings in the registry, this way you don't touch the registry.

The above naturally assumes you are looking at a 2000 or xp system. I think on 98 it should be under (this could be wrong, I don't have one in front of me to look at):

C:\windows\All Users\application data\aol

If this doesn't work copy out just the user file your interested in and rename it "anything.pfc". Then just use any version of AOL to open it.

Good luck,

Paraben Email Examiner supports all AOL email archives.

Is this new? Last I checked they were advertising aol 9.0 only. I called and got a not too confident yes to the question of support for earlier versions.

at least 7.0, 8.0 and 9.0 are supported, as I tested.
