Hi, Folks -

You know the story: buncha photos were deleted from camera, picked-up a virus on the net, and wound-up losing all the photos saved on the computor.
Now, I'm simply trying to recover as many as I can.
I've discovered a whole pile of nice software programs ("Recover My Photos", etc), that have found hundreds of so-called 'Deleted' photos from my Flash Memory Card through the Card Reader, but I'm interested in accessing the camera's BUILT IN memory to see what's there, if anything.
It's only 8 MB, but I have the feeling there's a picture or two in there.
Problem is, none of the programs I've found will recognize the camera as a Drive to examine - It's just not an option.
I'm wondering if anyone knows of any more sophisticated programs that may actually do this…or, failing that, if anyone knows how to re-install my camera as a computor drive?
The camera is an Oldie But A Goodie: an Epson PhotoPC 700, and I've got Windows XP.
Any thoughts on this would be GREATLY appreciated!

Will xp not pick it up when you plug it in? I don't know how your particular camera works, but you may need to set it up so that the internal storage is selected. If the memory stick is selected, and there isn't one in the camera, then obviously the computer will not recognize it.

Hi, Again -

Thanks so much for your reply! Any thoughts on HOW to set it up the way you described?

XP WILL recognize the camera, and installs it in the "Camera and Scanners" Folder of the computor - which is just where it belongs, obviously.

Problem is, none of the Recovery Software I've found will give me the option of searching the camera itself: all of them will look for pictures on my Hard Drive, as well as Drives A, E, D & F.

Windows puts those last four in a catagory called "Devices With Removable Storage." I'm thinking, if there was some way to install the camera into THAT folder (instead of "Cameras & Scanners"), the Recovery Software would just assume its another drive and give me the option of searching there, too.

See my problem?

On the surface, it doesn't SEEM like it would to be too difficult: you could argue any digital camera with a Flash Card or Memory Stick IS another 'Device With Removable Storage.' That's what it's doing, right - storing information?

Of course, the only other solution I can think of would be to find some NEW Recovery Software that WILL recognize the camera.

Again, if anyone's got any ideas, it would be GREATLY appreciated!

Hi Bruce,

My understanding is that some cameras have an option which can be set so that they appear to the computer to which they're attached as either a digital camera or a hard disk. If you can set yours up as the latter perhaps you'll get a drive letter assignment which will enable your recovery software to work.

Failing that, perhaps you could try to assign a drive letter to the camera:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;307844

I don't know if XP is going to view it as a drive/partition/volume though once it's already connected so that might not be possible.

I don't see a reference to either of the above methods on the Epson site for your camera but (assuming you're still stuck by this stage) it might be worth dropping them a line to see if they can help. Could be that a different driver would do the trick.

Let us know how you get on?

Jamie

sorry i missed this post, have you tried this application - ZAR

http//www.z-a-recovery.com/digital-image-recovery.htm

I've used it with my CF card and it does a nice job retrieving deleted pics
