I have a dead SSD drive… No power coming from it, isn't recognised as a boot option and fails to identify when used with an external caddy.

What options are there to recover the data from the drive? The data that needs to be retrieved it live on the mcahine i.e. it hasn't been deleted so I'm not worried about wear levelling or garbage collection but the data itself is of high importance so any advice on recovery options would be greatly appreciated

Thanks!

You probably need a specialist data recovery company who may need to do chip off recovery.

SSDs do appear to have quite a high failure rate.

One company to try (in UK) is www.mjm.co.uk

Windows recovery is the analysis that is made to scan the lost, accidentally deleted or damaged data from the formatted partitions of Windows hard disk. This is also a mechanism to extract the inaccessible data from the Windows operating system supporting both FAT and NFTS file systems. When data becomes damaged in Windows, you need to use an efficient Kernel for Windows data recovery software is used to retrieve the data.

MarryWilson - software only solutions will not work for dead drives.

If the drive cannot be seen in an external caddy, then software alone will not fix it.

I would attach that drive to a Linux machine, or easier boot that machine from a live Linux CD.

See if the drive is now recognized.

One of the first things I tried was to boot into a live Helix CD but I still couldn't see the drive. I have considered using BackTrack but presume that this will also give me similar results as they're both running on Linux archetecture.

Like I say, as the drive is not showing up in the BIOS bot options, I presume there is no power coming from the unit itself although being SSD it is hard to tell. I think a data recovery specialist is the most likely solution at this stage. thanks for all your help and suggestions!
