I've got FTK 4.0 installed on a Win 7 VMWare enviornment. For some reason the dongle is not recognized. VM shows the USB connected, in explorer it shows codemeter connected.
What else could the issue be? I can't seem to start FTK as it tells me no sec device connected.

Have you tried the tab at the top of the VM?
VM -> Removable Devices -> "Select device" -> Connect.

Yes, VMWare recognizes the device and it's mounted in Windows, so I see it there as well but FTK is not recognizing it.
This might sound stupid, but I've done this in the past…
Do you have another Codemeter dongle connected to your host machine? If so, would it be possible that you connected the wrong dongle to your guest machine?
I have already done this in the past where I wanted to connect the FTK dongle to my guest VM, but ended up connecting my Encase 7 dongle instead…

found the solution. It's a bit odd but I had to uninstall the newer version of codemeter and install an older version. Now it works.
I'm curious about running forensic tools in VM as it's something I've shied away from because I was worried about performance being reduced or stability issues.
Do you notice a major performance reduction? Are you having other issues with software not always working as it should and what sort of specs are the machines that are running this in VM?
Sorry to hijack the thread but thought it might be semi relevant as a few of you here obviously have experience in using forensic tools in VM environment )
