Has anyone heard of Samsung phones which were set up without a PIN, at some point requiring someone to enter a PIN?
sounds crazy right?
A user who claims they never entered a PIN in the phone in the setup process (he has 0 reason to lie to his counsel) now has a screen lock requiring a PIN.
Too long since last used?
Forensic software trying to make an image and failing triggering some sort of PIN?
Turned on and tried to update the security patch and asked for a PIN?
Just seeing what you guys think about this weird situation.

A PIN that can be set up later on a device Find my mobile or associated with a googleaccount for android devices. If it is prior to Android 5 then there was a backdoor to unlock. V5 onwards Smartlock was introduced. It is possible if device setup with home WiFi paired to device once in home WiFi area can unlock device. Again none of these need be set up from the start
Possible way forward is to identify model number, mobile network operator or service provider it was connect, and ddmmyy when phone purchased and account active. That way it might help initial investigation and check out Android version, specific operator profiling, and checking user manual and websites relevant to make/model.
