Is there anyway to recover data when the smart fails. I am trying to recover data from a WD Caviar 160BG IDE and it is telling me that access is denied missing administrative privileges.

Any ideas other than trash can????

So does no one have an Idea!

I mean a simple that isn't possible would be sufficient.

How important is the disk? Is this a case disk or a work disk?
If the data is really important you can always have a specialized company recover the data for you.

Providing a bit more context will help, what approaches did you already try? Which OS ?
Is there any hardware in between the HD and the system that could cause the issue?

I'm assuming that you have received a warning that the HDD S.M.A.R.T. indicates some kind of probable drive error. That need not mean that data is missing – it could only be that the number of read errors are on the increase, suggesting that the drive may fail soon. But I can only guess.

Missing administrative privileges … uh … what? That sounds as if you are doing something fundamentally wrong somewhere. Are you using Windows software, and do not have required Administrator privileges? That could mean that a lot of other things begin to give you odd error messages.

In that case, you probably need to examine the documentation for whatever software it is you are using.

Or is there data on the disk that you do not own, and do not have access right to?
