Hello all, I did a search for this but nothing really helpful came up so perhaps someone here can give me some direction.

Yesterday, I noticed a suspiscious individual taking photos of a friends car. I then quickly followed him and recorded him on my stratosphere, asking him why he was taking pictures. He then went to attack me and I also recorded this. I noticed he had a visible id of some sort so I attempted to record this as well. He was able to smack the phone out of my hand (which caused the phone to fall and the battery to come out) and run off.

The video itself is on my phone under the name temp_video but I am unable to load this in any media player. I want to give this video to the police, can anyone give me an guidance on how to recover this file?

Are you on Verizon Wireless?

Have a look at http//www.samsung.com/us/mobile/cell-phones/SCH-I405LKAVZW-specs

If your smart phone is on Verizon, the spec states your phone should have a 4GB microSD card (second to last entry at foot of page) and it may be the video is recorded on it?

Yes I do. I found the "temp_video" file on the sd card, at /sdcard/DCIM/Camera.

Maybe a little more information. The cretin slapped the phone out of my hand before I was able to end the recording (hence it was cutoff when the battery fell out upon hitting the ground), so I am guessing it didn't properly add the headers or something like that.

OK, that is fine. Some suggestions.

Assuming the "temp_video" has a file size and not '0 bytes' then take your mobile and the microSD card to the police, get them to make a backup and working copy and let them see if they can get anything using e.g. FLV player ( http//www.addictivetips.com/windows-tips/fix-player-can-repair-and-play-corrupt-avi-video-file/ ), Video Converter ( http//www.addictivetips.com/windows-tips/how-to-fix-avi-video-file-instantly-with-divfix/ ), maybe see if any images can be viewed using IrfanView (http//www.irfanview.com/) etc or if they can carve out data to see if anything is recoverable?

Does the temp_video have a recognisable signature? If not, can you say (in hex) what the first few bytes are? (even better would be a hex dump of first 0x100 bytes)

I cant really make anything from it, but then again I've never had to mess around with such things. I can provide the file if anyone is interested.

This looks like the start of a 'Quick Time' file, .3GP

Your dump has the 'ftyp' header and start of the mdat segment - but no segment length. This would be typical of a file before finalisation.

In order to read the file you would need a moov segment to be added, and I think these are probably stored in memory until required. ie, in your case it will have been lost.

I would be happy to try and reconstruct the file. I would require the temp_video file and also a small but complete video from the same camera. The later is required to pinch certain configuration details from the moov segment.

How big is the temp_video file?
