Hi I am a university Computer Forensics Student who plans to create a set of sat nav forensics tools for a final year project. As money is a major factor for my research i must justify what brands of sat navs to research. This is where i need you guys!!
Hopefully ive done this post correctly and there should be a poll for you guys to fill in. If everyone could select either a sat nav that they personally use or the brand that they find to be most popular for examinations - this should then give me good grounds to justify my research ……especially since you guys all work in CF!!!!
thank you, your input will be much appreciated!!!
ps. If you use another make if you would mind stating what it is please….thank you
Will your study identify what tools for forensic investigation are out there at the moment?
yer, it certainly would be beneficial to look into what tools already exist. I dont really know many tools that are available out there but im sure there are some. I know of POIEdit but thats about it. Hopefully i can build on whats already avaiable or somehow improve or add extra functionallity,,,,if that is possible.
Hi tootypegs,
Check out http//
They have a Tom Tom forensics software. It's one of the few i'm aware of.
Kind Regards,
Minesh
Ps, I voted TomTom.

Hello, tootypegs!
I know that the Paraben's Device Seizure has support data acquisition from the Garmin GPS devices.
Thanks! i'l have a look at those tools and "hope" that maybe i can produce something useful with hopefully some new functionality. I thought there was a gap in this market for some new research and tools but it looks like there are already a few out there!
Just for reference - I actually have an Alpine unit in my car - it's been fitted after the car was new (not by me). Other manufacturers of in car units include Panasonic, Kenwood, Clarion and Pioneer to name a few … All are as featured as the portable units, if not more so ! ( Mine isn't - it's ancient -P It barely knows where it is when it is parked outside the house … )
haha sounds like your sat navs a keeper P now if only i could get my uni to buy me a BMW with a built in sat nav to examine, now that wud be alrite! ………..in my dreams (
Hi Tootypegs,
How did your research go?
Am curious as for my dissertation I have been focusing on Satnav forensics and have created a software utility to recover forensic information from Garmin Satnavs.
How successful were you? Which make/models did you focus on in the end?
Ben

What information have you managed to obtain from Garmin devices in the end? At present, I was only aware that favourites and track logs were obtainable using current tools.
