SCSI Model DNES-309170 what card can read this drive? I have tried connecting the 80 pin 309170 through a 68 converter then from there to a SCSI Tableau write blocker. I can access other 80 to 68 pin SCSI drives, but the 309170 drive wouldn't mount just spin. I then tried an old PC with SCSI card and booted into LinEn, the test form factor drive worked just fine, but this 309170 wouldn't mount. I then rebooted the computer and went into the SCSI card setup, the 309170 card isn't being read.

Any help / suggestions to physically connect this drive would be appreciated. Current / or old yet available SCSI cards that can connect the drive, etc.

Thank you!

It is a long time since I've used a SCSI HDD. However, I would expect it to spin when power is applied. Is it possible the drive has failed?

My bad. And I personally shut it down the source system at time of collecting the evidence, so I know the drive worked at least then.

The reason we haven't used the original system to collect the drive is that the SGI machine has no CD / floppy drive.

Thanks for the reply.

A quick Google turns up the following spec sheet for your drive

http//www.hgst.com/tech/techlib.nsf/techdocs/85256AB8006A31E587256A7600722F04/$file/dnes_ps.PDF

It's bee a while since I've come across a SCSI drive in the wild, but from memory, you may have some luck trying different jumper combinations on the drive and/or SCSI terminators. Page 3 of the above PDF lists the various jumper settings available.

When the drive was in the original machine, was it the only device on the SCSI cable, did you see any terminators on the end of the chain? This may point you in the right direction…

As mentioned before, make sure you set the SCSI ID correctly, and there is no conflict on the chain, and depending on your controller there is no skip in the sequence. I have had some controllers ignore any IDs if there was a gap (i.e. 0, 1, 2,4 - ID 4 would be ignored).
