What are your favorite hardware tools for memory card imaging?

Here is my dillema.
I have tried four different devices to read a Transcend 6GB SD Class 6 card.
When it is in the device (FujiFinepix camera), the card is recognized, both by the camera, and when the camera is tethered to a machine, the Windows XP/Linux OSes allows browsing the card.
There are deleted images on the card that I want to recover, so I am trying to image it - so far no luck.
You say your machine can see it when tethered. Does it see it as a logical drive or is it seeing it through specialized software associated with the camera.
How are you trying to image it. What error are you getting.
You happen to try any generic USB multi card readers instead of write-block enabled units?
Yep. Tried the SanDisk 12 in 1 reader, and a generic 3 in 1 reader, and some other ones.
The card was formated within the camera. It should be a FAT32 since it is an 8GB card, with 4K or 8K cluster sizes.
When the SD card is in the camera, in Windows XP, and in Linux shows up as a generic imaging device, USB class 6 subclass 1 protocol 1, (\\.\usbscan0) that is a PTP device.
When in an SD card reader (generic or write blocked), although it shows up as a drive, it asks for the "removable media", which is already in - i.e. it does not see it.
I believe this camera uses the de facto DCF system, but don't understand why I cannot see it with standard USB MSC readers…
Obviously PTP will not help me.
Hi jhup,
Probably not important to your imaging, but is it 6GB or 8GB?
Is there a write-protect mechanism on the card?
Lastly, when you insert the media in the card reader in Linux, what meaningful output is returned or can be gleaned? (System log messages, device information, and file system information)
Cheers!

I recently had a 4GB memory chip that would not read in one of my 'old' standard readers, but did in a newer USB reader.
I don't know if it was a quirk of that chip, or if there is a 'updated' standard for >= 4GB chips

You need card reader that is capable of reading SDHC. Older card readers won't read the High Capacity cards.

It is an 8GB card, not 6. Thanks.
Duh. Duh DUH!
Wow, how embarrassing this is…
Harry you are absolutely correct.
I presumed my readers could handle the HC. I pulled one that does, and bang, all is well.
Thank you all.
