Hi wonder if anyone can help. We don't have a secure facility where I can leave stuff running overnight and have just moved to a new HQ. Prior to the move I used to take all the gubbins home in the car (yes, in the trunk) and run things overnight - not standard procedure I agree, but secure enough for our purposes. Now I walk or take public transport so home working's not an option anymore.

I requested some kind of locking cabinet or cupboard with power where I could leave my laptop running overnight (indexing, imaging, searching etc) but what the Building Services people have come up with is more like a charging cabinet - 5 compartments each with internal power and a locking door, suitable for laptop storage or charging unattended but entirely unsuitable IMO for running anything due to (a) no ventilation and (b) no room to open the laptop up.

I know we could drill holes in the back of the thing to get more ventilation, but access to the screen remains a problem.

Has anyone got any ideas about suitable cabinets/cupboards? I know we're amateurs at this kind of thing but it is what it is.

Cheers

Thanks, that's one line of thought I'm exploring.

How about a 1/2 19" rack cabinet they can be locked and provide proper ventilation for running equipment and secure. I have a full 19" setup this way at the office behind a locked door paranoid maybe ?

Secure - against what?

What are your main threats Unauthorised access? Someone inserting a USB stick that tampers with data? Cleaning crew unplugging systems? It is easier to determine what you need if you have an idea of what you want to protect against. Before you buy anything, you should do a threat/risk analysis.

One example An isolated room with a "secure" cabinet that allows an attacker to work on the lock for 8 hours is way less secure than a locked room and no other protection than video surveillance that sends rapid reaction whenever something odd is spotted.

Example To combat the first threat, i would add more layers of security (more locks on doors), perhaps even video surveillance and a motion detector that bring guards with nightsticks. Also, vetting the people who have access is also a good idea, then there is fire/flooding problems that could ruin your hardware, lightning strikes, power outages etc.

As in "wheel has been already invented, if you want to re-invent it you will need to make a rounder one" wink
