I think a "private" area should be accessable ONLY to registered users

OK, I'll bite. Why?

I for one feel uncomfortable sharing this forum with people who with their first post ask "how do I find the password for such and such", "how do I break in to this", etc. Funnily enough you never see them post again. Should genuine CF knowledge (whether LE or corporate, defence or prosecution) be used to answer these requests?

There's a lot of knowledge here. Should it be shared with those who quite possibly want to use it for illegal or possible 'immoral' purposes?

100% Correct Jonathan my views too !!!!!

Wait for the court case when the defence says i learnt it from the FF forum !!

Ah, now I understand. Sure, we do get posts that ask for this kind of information. I either ignore them, or IF I think it's a person asking to actually learn something, I'll point them to a resource like google. Nothing says that any of us HAVE to answer posts we don't find appropriate. In fact, I'd think most of us would ignore such posts.

So, let me ask this, would vetting work?

I see no value in a "private" area, and never have in any forum I've ever been a part of. I have a secret to tell you..the "bad guys" already know our techniques - all they have to do is read a book or two. I've seen nothing on that would even begin to constitute "privileged" or groundbreaking techniques and as such see no need for a private area. It's just another excuse to try to divide the industry even further.

This thread seems to be discussing two different points.

1) Technical knowledge and the sharing of it?

2) Should contributors be seen to be sharing knowledge that MIGHT be used by those who are less than honest?

I do not think 1) and 2) above are mutually exclusive.

Unluckely to be smart is not reserved for good guys and it's demonstrated every day even outside CF, probably bad guys already know techniques/tricks/etc. and if not they can learn from other sites/forums too.
Building walls has been rarely a good choice.
Instead, it could be useful to collaborate on research as keydet89 suggested in other threads.
Anyway there are PMs, so if somebody feels to have something very important to share only with the smartest members of FF can already do it.

In my experience 99% of the suspects in the cases I deal with have absolutely no idea of the traces of activity they are leaving on their hard disks. Even those who consider themselves 'IT experts' have are evidently clueless of the techniques and tools of forensic practitioners.

Do I want to make it even a little bit easier for them to hide and continue their crimes? Nope!

How about make it immensely easier for your compatriots and brothers-in-arms to do their jobs?

I will do that where I can - within the safeguards of a protected forum!

Do you know where there is such a thing?

I've recently been involved in an investigation (conducting analysis) of multiple systems regarding
- Any files that were opened by a specific user
- Any connections made from the system to other systems by a user

I'd love to provide this to all…do you know of any forum in which I could do so?

Well said, I totally agree.
