I have a Samsung S2 which has a broken screen, USB debugging off and a numeric passcode lock (which we have but cannot type in). We need to recover SMS from the handset but are starting to run out of options, mostly due to USB debugging being disabled. We have tried Kies (prompts you to enter the code which we cannot see due to the screen!) and other third party apps but no success. The only forensic tools we have available are Oxygen and EnCase 6.

Can anybody recommend any further action? Or are the SMS going to stay on the phone forever? Any help is welcome.

Also worth noting, the client does not require the handset back afterwards so a completely forensically sound method it not totally necessary.

Thanks in advance!!

The only idea I can come with is, get a working Galaxy 2 and mark the screen on both phones, separating it in smaller squares. Then type in the same area to first unlock the phone and secondly to activate USB debug.

Pretty unsafe maybe, I know…

Or… you could find a donor device or just purchase the screen and replace it…

Do you know if its running android 2.3 or 4.0+? if its running 2.3 you can disable the lock code.

UFED Touch bypasses the lock whether usb debugging is on or off, we have successfully done this a number of times.
If you don't have it though we would normally replace the screen

Thanks for the input guys. We had to opt with replacing the screen unfortunately which cost quite a bit. But once this was done, as expected Oxygen did a perfect download.

Thanks again!

Managed to haggle the price down to £100…was paid for by the client so we were not too bothered.
