NOTE I am posting observations from someone else who is attending a EnCase v7 roadshow of features. Take it for what it is - observations from an audience member (who I respect-only reason I would share), at a vendor roadshow, about a product with no set release date … on Twitter. That being said take it for what it is. I know many have wanted to know where the product was going and this might be a glimpse.

* EnCase v7 will run on your v6 hardware though may need RAM upgrade

* EnCase v7 supports smart phone/iPad acquisition and analysis built-in!

* EnCase v7 has new encrypted evidence file format, Ex0. Fastbloc SE and Pro Suite included in v7!

* * EnCase v7 is a big improvement. Lots of automation, distributed processing, and improvements where they were needed, namely.email.

* * *Forensic v7 will be taken at CEIC 2011. Pricing available week.before. Active SMS & PLSP customers get free upgrade.

* * * Fellow forensicators, @EnCase v7 supports EXT4! 😉

* * * * EnCase Forensic v6 will end with 6.19.

Greetings,

1) I think that built in phone support is because they rolled Neutrino into EnCase. I don't know how much additional work went into improving the features and function. It'll be very interesting to see.

Does the phone support require an additional license? Having the functionality is one thing, but if we have to pay an additional amount equivalent to Neutrino that'll be another thing.

2) I fear the RAM requirements will be severe.

I just worry how little work actually goes into the forensic edition these days, i fear that all the money is in ED, therefore most of the development time is spent there. Using it for e-mail is more painful than a ride down a bumpy hill on a bed of nails.
It's a bit annoying, as I find EnCase easy to use (that may just be because i'm most used to it), but more and more i find i'm trying to find reasons why I shouldn't defect and use X-Ways in conjunction with NetAnalysis etc instead (apart from the fact I haven't convinced the company to buy it yet p ).

Thanks Doug, I'm looking forward to seeing their presentation in NY in April. Nice to have a preview of the preview.

Well, going by past experience, version 7.2 will break something. We'll have to wait for 7.3

Thanks Douglas for the info. It sounds like v7 will induce a price increase if it contains new features and improvements improvements – I’m glad I opted for 3 years SMS!

Me too. Painful at the time though.

The new features look very interesting. EnCase has recently taken very much of a back seat for me as an analysis tool. Perhaps this new release may redress the balance. I wonder when the release data is. Anyone remember the interminable wait for FTK2 between its initial publicity and relase? And then the feeling of a huge let-down. lol
