Student in Digital Forensics Field.

Hello,
My name is Jeremy and I am a student at Champlain College in the US. We have recently been talking about different tools used in the field and have been working with FTK predominantly. I was wondering, is FTK the "industry standard" in forensic tools or are there other, better, products I should check out? Also, I run a Mac and would love to try tools for it as well, any suggestions? Thank you so much and I love reading everyones posts. I learn a tremendous amount from reading them.
