So, I was handed two DVD's today that supposedly held a image of a desktop that we are to look into.

Now, I have no idea who did the image or how they did the image. All I have are these two DVD's.

on DVD1, I have a BIN directory and a I386 directory.
Also on this DVD I have a BASE.ISO image as well as a bunch of .TAF files (Which I have never seen before).

So now I have the challenge of trying to put this back together and was looking for some suggestions.

Was going to use FTK imager to make a image and then bring it into FTK, but the .TAF files have me stumped. They are large, 600+mb. The .ISO image is only 101mb.

Since I am going blind at this, anyone have any initial thoughts on this?

Thanks,

Jason

EDIT On a side note, I was trying to open up the file in winhex to see what the header for the file is. However, I am a little confused on how to do that. Any help on that would be greatly appreciated (just not sure what I should be looking for).

On http//dotwhat.net/taf/7487/ I found the following comment

I've received a CD-ROM disk with toshiba notebook, it contains 6 such files of size 660MB. It seems to me that they are some kind of image files used to restore OS to its initial manufactuary state.

Just a wild guess, but they could be from Recovery CDs.

Just a thought, but It sounds as if you may be in over your head if you were going to open Winhex to check the header but don't know how, it wont help for someone to tell you how, as that will only lead to more questions about what you have found.

Edit. BTW what did you initial search of .taf turn up in the first few hits?

Surely not a problem, should that be the case - isn't that what these forums are for?

Your description not including the .taf files made me immediately think of system install or restore disks. So I think Scott is on to something.

30 seconds of searching and found this

"The .TAF file format is a proprietary format created by Toshiba and is used in a range of their products.

The format is compressed, allowing more data to be stored. The file is used as a container file, meaning it may contain many different types of files.

We have noted that .TAF files are mainly used by Toshiba for restoring operating systems (system restore) on their computers (disk images) and for storing digital media files (mp3s/images etc).

You will need to use the software bundled with your Toshiba products to use these files. "
