Got blank genuine MNO Mobile Network Operator USIM Universal Subscriber Identity Module cards which never got used before and not activated by an Operator's store.

Question Which parameters are on the USIM? Second Which parameters will be missed?

Test your brain!

a) no IMSI
b) no ICCID
c) no MSISDN
d) no MSIN
e) no IMEI
f) no MEID
d) no keys

ok, round two

Which of a-d are on the non-activated USIM?

Hang-in and respond if you like 😉

Good job! Mobile Equipment IDentity MEID also falls out - ok, sneak peek

The IC Card ID (ICCID) is on the USIM, the 'SIM-card number' on the backside printed/lasered
allocated at the USIM producer e.g. Gemalto

But what about a the MSISDN ('the mobile phone number')?

Surely as numbers are recycled, if the SIM hasn't been activated then an MSISDN cannot be assigned to it yet?

Some work for brain is always good, but why not just compare a blank USIM before and after activation and see the relevant modified information ?! )

At least twofold. In the past the MSISDN was often printed on the backside of the blister holding the USIM in its perforated Form Factor FF generation (2,3,4). So the mini USIM = 2FF, micro USIM = 3FF, nano USIM = 4FF and in e = embedded (not electrical) USIM = Machine 2 Machine (M2M) = MFF2.

Remember in the past SIM, nowadays USIM, U = Universal

This because global mobile broadband where either CDMA Code Division Multiple Access or FDMA Frequency Division Multiple Access. USIMs can handle both types and all new mobiles are in general 'world' phones globally running.

Ok, if the MSISDN was printed on the blister and delivered to Mobile Network Operator (MNO)'s stores there was a certain amount of MSISDN temporally blocked and within 'gold' numbers - easy to remember number combinations. As some MNO give away free prepaid USIMs on promotions a certain amount was double-blocked as assigned and lost. So this lead to nomore printing the MSISDN on the backside but instead assigned on registration of the subscriber.

Keep separated in your mind subscriber registration, USIM activation, USIM registering in a cell network (initial attach on turning-on the mobile or inlay into a running phone).

On the blank USIMs I got No MSISDN printed, therefore not pre-assigned.

If you figure out in which entity the MSISDN resides, you get your first scudo -)

@PassCodeUnlock - Sure, cloning USIMs in forensics one eats for breakfast. But the encrypted data on an activated USIM are not easy to read from outside.

Back to shortlist. Which parameter besides the ICCID must be on the USIM? Think Operator-focused!

Rolf,

Would there be any chance, please, that you can PM to me the ATRs from several of these blank USIMs in your possession?

Greg
