I have a WinMobile 7 OS LG Quantum C900 cell phone that I need to get text messages off of, and the local Police Dept does not know how to help (their Celebrite device does not do text messages for this phone/OS).

It must be possible, and I am getting desperate for an upcoming court case to prove harassment (over 1200 incomine text messages!).

I am guessing it is a WinMobile 7 OS issue, since I am continuously being told that the OS is the problem. So perhaps a Windows Mobile 7 Application Developer may have a tool that can back up/save text messages off of the phone prior to testing apps.

I also assume that someone at the LG Mobile dept could do it.

Any ideas of a way/point of contact that may be able to help?

Brian,

Are they active or deleted SMS you are trying to download?

Oxygen Forensics Suite 2012 is now a free download which I have had good results with previously, although Cellebrite is our first choice with mobile phone work.

I dont know much about the specific device you have, but I do know support from the main tools like cellebrite is limited with windows 7 devices… I havent tried oxygen, but they dont even list windows 7 in there supported devices (windows 5/6 is there)

I came across an interesting blog a while back that had some ideas for extracting data from windows 7 devices, and I have had some success following it. The problem now is the information is outdated, and doesnt work with the latest OS (mango, 7.5), so it really depends what version of windows phone you have

anyway, the link http//dig-forensics.blogspot.se/

Hope it helps

Hey

If the Quantum acts like an E900 then you should be able to recover sms messages pretty straight forward.

First you need to setup MFG - its a form of editing registry values restricted to LG models

1. Enable the MFG application by going to the dialer and dialing ##634# then pressing call.
2. Launch the MFG application and enter 277634#*# when prompted for a password.
3. Select the Engineer Menu item.
4. Select the Other Setting menu item.
5. Select the Edit registry menu item.
6. Set the input boxes on this menu as follows

Then you want to edit the registry to

You can unlock the phone by using the MFG registry editor.
Open the MFG app and use the password to open it. If you don't know it's (appmfg#*#)
Go to Engineer Menu -> Other Settings -> Edit Registry
Set your ROOT PATH to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE"
Set your input path to "\Comm\Security\LVMod"
Set your input key to "DeveloperUnlockState" and set to DWORD
Hit Query. Output result should return a "0" or a random long number. If it does continue.
Set your input data box to "1" and hit SET. Output result should be 1

This developer unlocks the device, you then want to set the number of applications which can be sideloaded to above 300,

10. Change the input path to "\Software\Microsoft\DeviceReg\Install"
11. Change the input key to "MaxUnsignedApp" and set to DWORD.
12. Clear the input data box and hit "SET".
13. Type "2147483647" in the inputbox and tap "SET".
14. Output result should be "2147483647".

If all succeeds, the device is interop unlocked.

From there you can sideload an application using one of the many xap installers on xda or retrieve data via wp7 root tools.

To get SMS messages you will want SMSBackup tool v0.8 available here

http//forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1448197

The registry values can then be changed at the end and the SMSBackup/MFG apps removed.

PM me if you need any help.

and @ Cyrus, ill attempt to update the blog with some mango information soon.

Hello BrianReeves,

The instructions from agolding are good but additionally you probably need to give SMS Backup root access.

Use WP7 Root Tools from http//www.wp7roottools.com/ for this purpose.

PS. XRY 6.3 have limited support for SMS on this device.

Shouldnt need WP7Root Tools for this purpose as it hasnt been written with the SDK in mind, ive tested before without and it worked fine.

From what i understand XRY 6.3 requires an internet connection so on this handset at least the MFG method should be used to "jailreak" the handset to be "forensically sound"

I tried it myself before posting and SMS Backup failed until I gave it root privileges.
I quote from the xda-thread (http//forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1448197),

"The app should be compatible with devices supported by WP7 Root Tools(need to mark the app as Trusted)
Also support fully-unlocked phones"

I guess that means it shouldn't be enough with only dev+interop-unlock. Maybe you succeeded on a Nodo device? It could be different there.

XRY does not need internet connection for this device, it prompts similar instructions as in your post.
