Third Year Project - SIM card analysis and location data

Hi,

I'm just starting my third year project into SIM card analysis and location data. I have to identify and evaluate the information that can be retrieved from SIM cards using open source tools and then to develop a tool that can identify the location of the phone when it was used.

Can anyone please suggest any open source tools that I could use? Especially ones that can retrieve location data, so that I can see how they have gone about it.
