I have heard and read a bit about Flash boxes and vampire taps for thumb drives but I was wondering if anyone on the forums uses one they might like or know of a vendor that deals with tools of this nature.

My office is always trying to stay ahead of of the " What IF" situations. I'm still googling around but word of mouth sometimes seems to be the best way.

I presume you mean vampire clips. Vampire tap punctures into a cable and "feed off" that way.

A vampire clip clips onto the "legs" of a surface mount IC and works that way. Sometimes they are called micro grippers, micro claws, roach holders, etc.

Accutek makes a slew of converters and adapters for one type of surface mount packaging to an other.

Chip Quik makes grippers and good clips.

Pomona Electronics makes some nice SOIC, SOJ clips

You may also want to look into Wells-CTI, or Ironwood Electronics, both make a slew of test sockets from SOIC to all the SOP varieties, BPA, etc.

I think test socket is the most appropriate way to work with surface mount chips.

mscotgrove pointed you in a potentially good direction. Ace Laboratory makes a number of data recovery complexes, including PC-3000 Flash.

I haven't used flash yet, but I do have their PC-3000 UDMA and Data Extractor. Their equipment tends to be pricey, but top notch for recovery purposes.

The learning curve for Ace products can be steep, though. It's a Russian company with sometimes limited training and poorly translated manuals. Their North American reseller is a company called Deepspar in Canada (http//www.deepspar.com/products-pc-3000-flash.html).
