Drawing on my background as a skip tracer, help desk tech, military cop, computer incident handler and forensic analyst I offer the following ideas.

1. Do believe that paranoia = survival.
2. Your security software cannot always protect you from yourself. Yes, that means that you are often the problem. Deal with it.
3. Do not ever click on a link inside an email.
4. Do realize that your personal, private information is viewed and processed by nameless strangers everyday. You will never be able to control your privacy the way you used to. Let this fact influence your future activity on any computer.
5. Don't be the individual that always chooses convenience over security. There are already millions who do. Those are the people who will be affected first by the next big exploit/trojan/worm/virus/rootkit/etc.

I realize these are geared more towards a security mindset than actual techniques. The proper mindset may prevail when techniques are not available. Just my $.02 worth.
