Tuning/customising Bulk Extractor

Hi Guys,
Just playing with 'bulk_extractor' for a specific job.

Its a very functional tool, however I would like to do some customizing to reduce function to some specifics and to increase the speed. I would like to triage a lot of disks and so speed is important. I would like to start with just the 'email' scanner and work from there.

Has anyone done work tuning bulk_extractor in practice? I can read a 1TB SATA drive in about 3 hours or so, and I would like to get bulk_extractor running at that sort of speed.
