Story here

TL;DR version - he was convicted under the Obscene Publications Act over some recovered IRC chat logs. I think this might be the first case of it's kind in the UK, since the law was changed because of it.. ?

So the adage of "not judging someone by what they say, but by what they do" no longer holds true in the deep south, sorry Kent?

You could argue the very act of "saying" something is "doing" something. For example, inciting racism or terrorism is only 'saying' but may constitute an offence.

It's possibly a philosophical argument but the act of 'writing' or 'speaking' is potentially a deed in itself.

Well, I disagree. Let's hope the libraries and bookshops of Kent are prepared for charges due to distributing crime fiction. This is the last I'm going to comment on this story.

Doing a bit of research shows that your office is only 12 miles north of Kent Police HQ, Jon - does that mean you live in the "deep south" too?

*plays banjo*

I love Kent. Was in wonderful Broadstairs only last week. But yes, the registered office was carefully chosen to be located comfortably on this side of the state border. wink

I'm not necessarily disagreeing. I was just playing devils advocate a bit D . It's a tough one.

We would need to know the exact specifics of the case to come to an informed judgement.

Did anyone see the headline on the original article? "Pervert Gavin Smith guilty in landmark internet case" LOL, Kent Online. Tell us what you really think!

Ok, well this was supposed to be a reply, but here's the link
