Hey guys and gals,
im a student going into my 2nd year of studying forensic computing. i have managed to secure myself a placement for my industrial year as long as i pass the vetting procedure. i have a concern as my brother has been in trouble with the police for digital crimes, im clean as a whistle, but will this effect me? im really scared that it will and if it happens now its going to continue happening and completly ruin my career before its even started!

can anyone shed any light on the subject,

thank you

B

I wouldn't have thought it would have any impact. The vetting process is first and foremost about your integrity and background. I guess for your role that you would need either CTC or SC clearance for such a role in which case questions are not asked about your siblings.

I believe I've heard something about Data Protection Act that they would only keep your criminal record for 5 years or so if it's not a severe case. Don't take my words for it though.

I think they are set to spent after 5 years, then only show up on higher level checks. I don't think they are ever removed from record. On application forms they only need to be mentioned if asked for.

When applying for jobs they won't do a CRB check on your brother so it's aright. I'm pretty sure they would require his consent. I've only seen one app form for the police which asked whether people you live with had any records.
