Untraceable IP Address

What makes you think that the IP address is untraceable? I found lots of information about it.

For the reasons I mentioned above.

I ran a traceroute to the IP address and found it, no problem. The IP address appears to be owned, through lookups, by British Telecomm, and I found contact information for both technical and admin contacts.

I had little trouble tracing the IP address…

I can only say that when checking we got blank responses.

if you ran a tracert, and didn't terminate at the IP address, then there are a number of possible issues…like the IP address wasn't live at the time, for example.

Using whois and other searches produces nothing and searching google etc the UK shows no result

I suspect you made some error in the whois lookup – perhaps you asked the wrong source?

A useful free resource for this kind of research is www.samspade.org. It usually gets you to the ISP or similar network owner from an IP address … from there on, it depends on what the ISP/owner is willing to tell you.

www.dnsstuff.com also provides some similar services for free – their IPinfo service informs me that while the IP address translates to www.fallsforum.org, they could not find the opposite translation, and suggests that that domain name may be a forgery. This may only be a temporary glitch in name lookups, of course.

I think I must have got in wrong somehow (tch!) because I tracked it a second time and I now have further info this time. I agree with the fallsforum could not be found and the reason for that is not clear.

This is interesting, the IP is indeed in the BT range for ADSL cusomers with static IPS.
If you do an nslookup on the IP you will get www.fallsforum.org, but looking up www.fallsforum.org will give no result.

The reason is that the domain fallsforum.org is no longer registered, therefore there is no nameserver for that domain, but there is still nameservers for the reverse lookup, most likely at BT.

According to http//www.expiresoft.com/domains/available/2007-05-18-179.htm fallsforum.org had been de-registred on 18 May 2007.
Your best hope is with BT, they should be able to tell you to which user the IP is assigned and who created the reverse DNS entries.
