"Will a trunk-mounted radio damage computer evidence?".

http//www.computerforensics.com/radio.html

I guess that's "myth busted" then…

That's an interesting link, I wonder though, how much modern media (this was 1997 after all) would differ with the increased density ?

( One to add to the possible Masters Dissertation List 😉 )

Conclusion The contents of all four floppy disks and the hard disk were unchanged in any way. The CRC values of all files were checked both before and after the test period. Even the disks that were placed directly against the transmitter/receiver were not affected. We do invite others to conduct their own carefully monitored tests and would be interested in compiling the results with different brands and frequency trunk-mounted radios. While this test does not alleviate the necessity to properly safeguard the integrity of computer evidence, it does appear that magnetic media is less corruptible than some believe.

That is a bold statement, considering only the CRC values of the files were checked.

Everything changes, and changes all the time.

I didn't see anything in snopes.com or Google. Wouldn't the computer have to of been transported while it was powered up? That would certainly go against current practices. Sounds like foolishness, but you can bet at some time a defense attorney will make such an argument.

I can see how it can happen….

How often is the trunk scrubbed and sanitized after transporting evidence from previous cases? Absent that, there is always the possibility of cross contamination. (ok… I'm obviously kidding - put the flame-guns down ) )

According to PC World - for a magnet to destroy data on a hard drive, it would have to be very powerful.

I have yet to hear of a magnet cross contaminate the HD and *put* CP on it. Almost like the virus that downloads CP *and* categorizes it, labels the folders etc according the to badguys preference )

A large number of Americans claim to have been abducted by 'Little Green Men' or UFOs. Maybe this would explain it.

Everything changes, and changes all the time.

Corollary
[quote="Gregory House M.D.]"Everybody lies

It's a basic truth of the human condition that everybody lies. The only variable is about what.

I am pretty sure that a bunch of electrons or positrons or bosons or whatever may have migrated from the radio to the hard disk but would they create a valid picture, and a p0rn one? 😯

Besides being - child pornography apart - a good way to save on adult magazines and online payed sites roll , it could be the start of the development of an actual Infinite Improbability Drive wink

@mscotgrove
…and a few had also alien devices implanted
http//www.ufoencounters.co.uk/truth-about-alien-implants-human-bodies.html
http//www.project1947.com/kbimpcat.htm
http//en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alien_implants

Would that be a valid reason for not being employed (classified as "body modification")? ?
http//www.forensicfocus.com/index.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=7008

Or … since such implants are said to emit radio waves, may a policeman (abducted by UFO's and with such a device implanted) create a porn image by simply holding the seized PC in his hands?

I was told that in the United States, a defence attorney successfully argued that child pornography mysteriously appeared on his client's computer after it was transported in the trunk of a police car next to the radio.

Does anybody have any information about this case ?

I want to see what was the arguments, if it's true

Thanks

It seems that all of us who read this post jumped onto Google to search and we've all come up empty handed. Perhaps the person who told you that can provide you with a source… I am highly doubtful, however, given the nature of the case it surely would have made National and International (US & Canada at the least) news.

No source .. didn't happen. )

Even WITH source, if impossible …didn't happen.

Even if some defense attorney actually tried it, I doubt an actual judge would have been so gullible (or mis-advised) as to actually fall for it! 😯

If anyone happens to find the actual defense attorney, I may suggest him to also try with the same judge the Chewbacca defense
