Does anyone know if there is any data kept or left of USB drives, external hard drives or read only cd's to point to that storage having been used on a particular machine. Of course if someone writes to such a medium then the evidence is there, but say for instance if someone looked on a USB pen, full of illegal material and copied it to their hard drive or somewhere else or played a pirate dvd on a computer, is there any indication to suggest that this has taken place on tht particular CD/USB pen???

Well, I don't know about CDs, but we've covered the reverse issue with USB devices pretty extensively in this forum. Rather than data about the computer system being left on the USB pen drive, there is a good deal of information about the pen drive that is left on a Windows computer, particularly in the file system and Registry.
But to directly answer your question, not that I'm aware of. I'm not sure what you would expect to find on a piece of read-only media…given the definition of 'read-only', why would you expect to find anything about a machine it was used in?
