Intriguing blog post on the F-Response site, regarding using a product called USB Over Ethernet to use F-Response over the internet allowing you to image any internet connected computer you have access to. It makes the remote computer believe that the license on the dongle has been installed on it. I presume it works with any dongle. Has anyone successfully used USB Over Ethernet with something like EnCase?

Oh you tease.. What a Lovely Idea.. Say for On-site exams..when you don't want to keep carrying around that very expensive dongle … And a Nice Justification for Cellular Internet… Hmm..

I am trying it now.. The Server can see a SafeNet USB Key,. which seems to be the EnCase Dongle.. but The FTK Dongle doesn't show up on my list…

Hm..

Arrg… Seems that the USB over ETHERNET does something to the EnCase Dongle, when Mounted, to make it unusable locally. Not sure about over the network at this point though..

That seems reasonable to me. After all, the purpose of the software is not to get around licensing but to make it unnecessary to take the dongle with you.

As a matter of fact, we recently had to complete a job in a site in Europe where we were reluctant to take the dongle and used USB over ETHERNET to connect to the F-Response dongle back here in the US.

Worked like a charm.

Whats wrong with using your dongle as a network dongle and logging in via VPN to the host? Thats what I do with FTK…. No difference in price.

Ok..So it works.. Great.. I was just hoping you could use it as needed..but in order to do so you would have to have it setup prior to leaving…or have a machine setup just to be a dongle server… But the big thing is that it apparently works.

My setup did not see the FTK dongle (except the Mass Storage Portion, which it couldn't mount over Ethernet).

I think that the issue was that once the dongle has been assigned via USB over Ethernet, it can't be used by another/local system. That seems to be the case with most network attached USB hubs.
