Thanks for the replies, but it is highly appreciated.

Really? Then you need to work on your Google-fu. Try typing "books" in the search box in the upper left corner of any page on the site.

I am new to the forum and I run a search…

I meant searched the forum not the net. I have had a look online, but the purpose of coming here and asking for your "opinion" is due to the fact that I see large number of professionals here and I value thier opinions highly.

In regards to the reviews on Amazon or other places, I don’t konw the reviewer, there is no way to know their level of involvement in the field.

Protoman07 your assistance is much appreciated. And yes I agree, Harlan Carvey books are good, I have read the "Windows Forensic Analysis DVD Toolkit" and I have asked the libertarian in my University to order number of the second edition.

Last but not least, when I said the DVD/CD I was hoping someone would come and say, a certain book comes with a demo of EnCase or some other software that is not open source so one can experiment with them, nevertheless, it wouldn’t be a bad idea for people to share a brief review of books they found really useful. I have seen couple of programming sites do that and I have benefited from them highly hence why I tried to make a post about it here.

The EnCE Book used to come with a demo version of EnCase, but it is a fairly limited trial.

"File System Analysis" by Brian Carrier
"Forensic Computing A Practicioners Guide" by Tony Sammes & Brian Jenkinson

But the forums have been over this topic a fair few times ( and we've answered a fair few times too ! ).

Incidentally, the search box, in the top left corner of nearly every page of the site isn't a generic Google search, rather one that is limited to the extent of the forums - and you can get a significant number of hits from the forums alone.

Thanks for the reply.

My bad, I actually used the search function of the forum instead of usnign the one on the left of the page.

However, I still do think that a sticky post titled "books" will be useful. And in that post people should only post name a book(s) and breif description to why it is useful or different from others.

I think that is a good idea.
