We WHERE running 64 bit Windows 7 enterprise on some of our new lab machines. We have server grade Dell Precision workstations…16 GB RAM, Intel quad core, 8MB cache, SSD drives.. I was a big supporter of win7 and had to do a lot of convincing to get everyone buy in on our team.

Encase 6.15 played nicely with the exception of not being able to use with RDP even under console mode. This, a lot of known I/O issues to older external USB drives, and still a lack of driver support, where the major factors that lead me to downgrade to 64bit 2k3. Running like a champ now.

I'd go for 64-bit Windows 7 rather than 32-bit. EnCase 6.15 supports Windows 7 64-bit as will the upcoming version of FTK 3.

I've been using 64-bit Windows 7 for the last couple of months on all of my machines and have had no issues at all to date.

I'm informed by an AD staff member that I'm doing some training work with right now that the Oracle patch for Windows 7 is now available. Since the rest of FTK3 was already Windows 7 compatible, this means you should be good to go migrating FTK3 to Win7 now.

There is a good reason to get rid of XP and that is because it is two generations old. Win7 has better memory managment and is generally faster which will help when running FTK. A forensic machine needs to be as fast as you can get it and needs to be made faster on a regular basis to keep up with software upgrades unless you don't mind waiting all the time for the computer to finish a process. That's why Access Data just released distributed processing capability in FTK 3.0.4 for up to four computers. I want to upgrade my machine and right now it is not old enough to replace yet. Our CISO won't let me order 64bit yet but he is going to let me order 32bit Win7 Pro and two Intel SSD hard drives. That will keep me going until Windows 8 comes out in two years which is when he will let me make the switch to 64bit.

You know if you order Windows 7 you get the 32 and 64-bit versions right? Or did you just mean switching to 64-bit capable processor?

downgrade to 64bit 2k3.

Was there a reason why you didn't try Server 2008?

As I mentioned earlier I've has no issues to date after 2 months of fairly heavy usage of Windows 7 64-bit.

In my experience of using Server line operating systems the driver availablity is not there; especially with graphics cards eg., if you want to run multiple displays, etc.

I have Windows 7 64 bit. Great so far, but cannot find a driver for Adaptec 29160 SCSI board.

The XP box mode works for the odd program that does not like 64 bit. Howver, the box is a bit tedious as you have to enable the printer, and other USB devices each time you want to use it.

@mscotgrove - the driver for that board is listed as "coming soon" by Adaptec (here)

Whoa whoa whoa - you make it sound like a hardware vendor will post something like that on there site forever only to later pull the product page down or move it to the "legacy" grave yard of their support site.

I NEVER saw that happen with any other versions of Windows except for 3.11, NT 3.5x, NT 4, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows 2000, Server 2000, Server 2003, Windows XP, Vista. So mind your history before you get all huffy!
