Greetings Everyone,
I am a new CFA and I use this forum a lot to answer all of my newbie type questions. I searched for an answer to this prior to posting, but I was unable to find to find anything.

I have recently learned how to locate the last files that were view in Windows Media Player via the registry. I thought there might be a similar list of recent files for VLC. Any ideas? When I Google’d that question I got tons of hits for how to disable that feature, but nothing on where to find the information.
Thanks!
Jeff

Depending what tool you are using to examine the registry you can often get different information, so my first recommendation would be to use several different tools and look at the NTUser.dat for the specific user account you are interested in.

It's been a while since I did a registry analysis but from memory you want to look for MRU (most recently used) keys within the registry, quite often you will get a breakdown of the last 10 or so files opened with a particular piece of software (VLC, WMP etc).

a lot of MRU keys arent app specific. that kind of info is usually kept by the application. MRU keys for videos and things will track the last X video files opened by extension, but thats about it.

I'm positive that I've seen MRU's listed by application in the NTUser.dat before with Xways……I'm not going crazy am I?

I have very vivid memories of seeing VLC listed too in the past.

Not being a registry guru is this something that maybe has changed from XP to Win7?

Could this have been a reg key created by a third party app that I was looking at and my memory is confusing it with the NTUSer.dat?

The current versions of VLC have moved its recently used lists out of the registry into a .ini file.

I am fairly certain I too remember older versions of VLC used the registry to store this info (it most likely would have been stored in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\VLC or HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Videolan), however it is now located in
Users\<Username>\AppData\Roaming\VLC\vlc-qt-interface.ini

I can't be sure when/or what version of VLC these changes happened. i have tested with 2.0.1 & 2.0.6 and it is correct for these two versions.

Also, it should be noted that there is a setting (in preferences) where you can turn off saving history info.

Spot on, thanks andforensic, I always like confirmation that I'm not losing my mind.

I just did a quick check on my XP partition after running a few videos and confirmed that the file "vlc-qt-interface.ini" file located under the Application Data tree does indeed have the history of recent files.

Adam,

Depending what tool you are using to examine the registry you can often get different information, so my first recommendation would be to use several different tools and look at the NTUser.dat for the specific user account you are interested in.

Can you elaborate on this? What I mean is, if you use a viewer, most viewers will show you what's in the Registry…RegEdit, Yaru, even WRR from MiTeC (with the exception of 'big data'). So when you say that different tools will show you different results, what are you referring to? I'm curious if I'm using one of the tools that provides these results that require the use of different tools.

Also, since you made this recommendation, what tools would you recommend?

Thanks.
