There is one called QEMU which I have tried with raw images and it works well.

If all you are intrested in is the cost then you should take a look at VMserver

http//www.vmware.com/products/server/

It is free and as far as I can see does everything that VMware Workstation does.

If you have to have OSS, then check out Xen. http//www.xensource.com/products/xen/index.html

Otherwise, VMware Player and VMware Server are both free and work quite well. VMware Player does not let you create new virtual machines but there are many prebuilt VMs out there for free download or you could create new ones with VMware Server. The main difference between VMware Server and Workstation is Workstation supports multiple snapshots and the Server is a client/server app. Other than that, they work quite well on Linux and Windows.
