Hi im having some trouble with VMware and Helix 3, iv got VMware to boot helix but, when I get the desktop screen, I click into helix and nothing happens, the mouse or keyboard will not work. They are both wireless mouse and keyboard, so i tried a USB keyboard and still no luck, then i tried a P/S2 mouse and still no luck.

Iv read up that it might be to do with the tools, and iv tried installing the tools via the prompt that VMware gives me but it just says "Make sure that you are logged into the guest operating system, if you do not see VMtools installing please run start>run in your virtual machine and enter D\setup.exe.

I cannot do this as the mouse or keyboard isnt work, iv also tried installing the USB controller Alcor Micro Mass storage device to see if this will enable the devices to work, but no luck.
One thing that does work, is to boot to helix I must click into the vmware screen and then everything works then, just not in helix itself.

can someone please help me with this, and any help would be great.

Thanks in advance

What version of VMWare are you using?

Are you attempting to image the entire VMHost?

It would probably be easier to mount your VM Servers/Systems, and run helix from them (which is what Helix recommends)

You can use other tools to image the SAN seperately if you need to find latent VM systems (delted servers, etc.)

What information are you attempting to gather?

"What version of VMWare are you using?"

Well I am currently in university studying forensic computing and these are the tools we've been using.

Im currently using VMware 7.1.1 282324 build.

"Are you attempting to image the entire VMHost?

At the minute VMware is installed to my computer and I am running helix from an image as a live CD, So i run from the Disc instead of installing, we were told to do this.

"You can use other tools to image the SAN seperately if you need to find latent VM systems (delted servers, etc.)"

I dont know what this means, Im kinda a n00b to this )

No information is being gathered, its just they use this at University and we were told to get it also.

I'm doing CO2513 at UCLAN as well.

I ran into the same problem, googled it and came up with your post. So I went off and solved it myself.

The trick is make a new machine, but specify compatibility with an earlier vmware version (so 6.0 instead of 6.5).

Then it will work.
