A bit of a heads-up
Google have released a new picture format with reportedly better compression ratios than jpeg or png formats. The format is 'webp' (pronounced 'weppy' I believe).
Read about it
I've had a look at the supplied tools and the format is producing significantly smaller files than the jpegs in my collection. The Chrome browser is capable of rendering the pictures as is Picasa I understand (although not tested).
The format uses RIFF containers so on my Linux machine the file command shows the file to be "RIFF (little-endian) data" with a mime type of "application/octet-stream"
Just something else to look for if you are looking for pictures.
