Posting to all the Forensics Examiners out there. I'm working on getting my supervisors to buy in the need for our examiners having a tablet. I have my reasons but am looking to this community to see why you would need a tablet, what tablet you would suggest and how it will help examiners.

Paracetamol for all the headaches you get lol

Personally the only reason I could see an examiner needing a tablet or similar would be to keep guides / notes for doing investigations. For this anything would be needed

If you use electronic documentation, instead of paper/pen?

If you need to post this question then you probably don't need a tablet.

Budgets are tight. I gotta agree with Mr Morgan on this one. As an IC, it's your duty to maximise the value of your equipment to your job. By way of example, I have a killer workstation with a $50 video card. I could have spent the extra, but I don't need amazing 3D for forensics.

In the field an iPod/iPad/tablet could be helpful for web access and keeping a PDF library of related documents/books.

Most of your reply's are consistent with what I was thinking. I'm just looking for more ammo when I submit my request and the supervisors start asking questions.

Agree with why everyone on this one, why would you even consider tablet ???
for the same money or less you can get 11.3 - 13.3 lightweight netbook with more power than any current xpad/tablet "thingo" on the market

xpad/tablet = not expandable, limited memory, limited storage, limited ports or no expantion ports at all, no forensic applications to run!

lightweight netbook = faster CPU, 4 gb ram, (some expandable to 8 gb) 7200 rpm HD (on some), enough ports to attach other external devices, run forensic stuff, easy HD encrypt for field work security.

no contest

You need a tablet because you are a nerd and it is shiny, not because it does any job better than, say, a dedicated PC would. )

Unless of course you work in an Indiana Jones-style warehouse and need it to scan a load of barcodes and double check where you put the Ark of the Covenant.
