Do you have any other computer training or experience? Much of computer forensics is build on core understanding of computer hardware/software and networking. You might want to design a path based upon your current knowledge and where you would like to be involved with security and forensics 3-5 years from now. $40k would be a huge investment and hard to recoup if you found that your interests change a few years from now and want to focus on another area of IT.

Check with some of the local community colleges in your area. Look to see if any of them offer a short certificate in Computer Forensics. This way you could get exposed to the field without dumping 40K just to realize you need a degree in Information Systems first.

I'm speaking from experience here. I'm doing exactly what I've laid out above for you. I've earned my Associate of Technical Arts in Information Systems and I've used my elective credits to earn a certificate in Computer Forensics (20 credits). And let me tell you, now that I'm finishing my last elective/forensic course and a month from my AA, I've just now begun to feel competent to really start learning something. So far I've simply been grasping the basics… for two years mind you.

Good luck and dont let yourself be lord simply by the word Forensics. Without years of IT experience it will be struggle enough as it is.
