I'm a newbie looking to get into this field (currently working on my masters degree in CF). I'm aware that the forensics field, especially the mobile area really need multiple software packages to cover all bases. I'm looking to buy at least 1 software package to get started but it's hard to tell which is better.

My choices in no particular order

Oxygen Forensic 2010 (base version)
MOBILedit! Forensic
Paraben Device Seizure…..side question…what is paraben DDS? Same price as regular DS.

It appears that they all cover CDMA phones, Android and iPhone. Once you have one of these software packages do you even need to buy a sim card reader like SIMCON since the software can read SIM cards too?

thanks for the help,
Jeff

To add to your list in no particular order

MicrosyStemations XRY and CelleBrites UFED

Both of these can also perform physical examinations not just logical (for an extra fee).

I don't think it possible to say which of all the choices you have is the best. It would depend on what handset you are examining at the time.

Think of your forensic equipment as a mechanics took kit… Ever seen a tool kit with 1 spanner?… No, because 1 tool doesn't do every job.

I would suggest you identify (if possible) what handsets you are likely to be examining and then study how those handsets are supported by the various software/hardware options.

As you mention CDMA devices I would recommend getting BitPim (http//www.bitpim.org/).

The best part is the price tag!

Bear in mind that when you are performing an examination on a handset you would typically want to create a clone of the SIM card to insert into the device to power it on. If you were to purchase MSAB's XRY package then you get SIM cloning as part of the package (A nice touch is that the cards they provide are re-usable so you do not spend a fortune on buying a card for every handset)

Jeff, it's always better to try software before buying it.
Oxygen Forensic Suite has a fully functional 30-day Trial version (it includes all features of Analyst license). As far as I know - the same for MobilEdit and Paraben.
