flash drives, and other storage devices and bulky portable drives…

I got fed up with dragging all the boot CDs, nuke flash drives, and other tools for work.

I cannot avoid carrying the backup copy drives, but all the other tools can be moved to … tiny micro-flash cards.

So I bought a mini USB 2 combination card reader/writer that works with TF/SD/Mini SD/Micro SD/MMS cards. The USB head is extended far enough that so far it fit even in the tightest spot. I paid $5.

I purchased 5 x 4GB microSD (you can get 8GB sizes now), and all my CDs and other flash drives fit. I used a fine point permanent marker to write on the cards. $50 x 5 = $250.

If your hands are larger, even SD cards work out, plus some of them have a mechanical write "lock" on them, and more space to write onto. They are about the same price as the microSDs for 4G.

Future sizes for these tiny marvels will go up to 32GB per SDHC description.

Just figured this might help someone with the huge CD tower cases…

libertate, sounds great.

Maybe just one thing tho. Tech report suggest that whilst suitable for storing data like photo's, running programs from such can lead to early demise or the product. cant remember where i saw the report, but if its in a bookmark i'll post back

Kern, I'd like to see that if you find it. I have heard there's a limit to the number of writes supported (around 1 million) and there are certainly speed issues. I think most of us are aware of these however and suffer through them.

Maybe more suffering than I care for. I've been using SD, micro SD cards and Sony's Micro Vault USB stick for about a year. It's very nice to be able to carry 2-4gb on such small media, but… I have noticed that if I load really large files, such as ISO images or fill the stick about 3/4 full, the stick will "crash" and the files are unreadable. Perhaps it has something to do with me switching between my Windows 98 PC at work and XP at home. It could also be an inherent reliability problem with flash memory.

Bottom line, I make certain I have backups on more reliable media *and* I do not execute applications from memory cards, except for DBAN on a dedicated 16mb USB stick that I picked up for almost nothing.
