Hey all, new to this forum so forgive me if this is a repeat question that comes up a lot. Windows 8 Phones are something that a number of our clients are asking about in the litigation support end. Apparently they're getting quite popular in the business world, so we get asked all the time now if we have the capabilities to pull off SMS, MMS, etc etc from the phone. Naturally, the encryption is new and Microsoft doesn't appear to be playing ball with Cellebrite, so YES you CAN pull the file system, what good it will do you is beyond me seeing as it's all encrypted.
So that brings me to my question Has anyone found a way to get around this? I'm looking into Elcomsoft encryption-breaking software as a potential solution, however I suspect that when we attempt to test it we'll discover it needs around a month to crack a phone's encryption. It's a wild unknown. Has anyone had experience with the Elcomsoft software, or found any other "backdoors" to collecting WP8? (windows phone 8). I thank you all in advance.

I don't know about elcomsoft and I refuse to google for an answer to someone elses problem (others on here will no doubt do that for you). However elcomsoft, or any other password recovery software, will not just 'crack' encryption by pointing the software at a chunk of encrypted data and letting it run for a while (a month or a year). Elcomsoft (and cellebrite etc.) will need to code a solution specifically for windows 8 encryption and then you can point their software at your data and at that point it may take a month (or more, or less) to crack the data.
If I have misunderstood then please advise…

No, I think you've pretty much got it right. I contacted Elcomsoft and they said that they may be able to crack WP8 devices, since they're mainly encrypted with BitLocker. I honestly don't know why the brand of encryption software matters; my guess is it's still AES or the like. Idk it seems like a long shot but there's not too many other options?
